NUJ Ogun-East, DSS Pledge Cooperation to Promote Ethical Journalism

The leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun-East Independent Chapel, has pledged closer collaboration with the Department of State Services (DSS) in Ijebu-Ode to promote ethical journalism and strengthen public trust in the media.

The union’s executives, led by the Chairman, Comrade Oluseun Oduneye, paid a courtesy visit to the DSS office in Ijebu-Ode last Wednesday as part of efforts to familiarize the newly inaugurated chapel with key security stakeholders within the Ogun-East Senatorial District.

Speaking during the visit, Comrade Oduneye explained that the establishment of the Ogun-East Chapel was part of the state council’s broader vision to extend NUJ’s reach to journalists operating in the senatorial district. He noted that the move would ensure compliance with union ethics, protect members’ welfare, and promote professionalism among media practitioners in the region.

“Our goal is to create a structured and responsible media environment where journalists can operate ethically and confidently,” Oduneye said.

“The NUJ is committed to working closely with security agencies like the DSS to uphold the integrity of the profession and ensure accurate, fair, and responsible reporting.”

Also speaking, the Chapel Secretary, Comrade Funmi Adewoju Suleodu, emphasized the importance of the visit, noting that many journalists practicing in Ogun-East operate independently without the protective cover of a recognized union body.

She described the chapel’s creation as timely and necessary to bring such journalists under the NUJ umbrella for professional regulation and protection.

“Unfortunately, some individuals without proper training parade themselves as journalists, thereby tarnishing the image of the profession. We are determined to sanitize the media space and restore public confidence in journalism.”

In his remarks, the union’s Head of Task Force, Comrade Daniel Dairo, highlighted the importance of building a strategic partnership with the DSS, noting that both institutions play complementary roles in nation-building.

Responding, the DSS Local Government Security Chief (LGSC), Mr. Hope Godwin, who recently assumed duty in Ijebu-Ode, expressed delight over the visit and commended the NUJ for taking steps to strengthen professionalism in the media sector.

He pledged the agency’s support for the union’s activities and assured the journalists of an open channel of communication in the interest of peace and accurate information dissemination.

 “I’m particularly glad about this engagement because it aligns with our mission to collaborate with credible stakeholders,” Godwin remarked.
“You can count on our support as we work together to promote security, stability, and professional excellence.”

Other members of the NUJ delegation included Comrade Dare Majekodunmi and other senior journalists from the district.

The visit marked a new phase of cooperation between the media and the DSS in Ogun-East, aimed at fostering professionalism, press freedom, and national security.
