Ogun East 2027: He Came, They Gathered — How OmoOwo Turned Sagamu Into a Launchpad for His Senate Bid
By Charles Segun Adegbite
SAGAMU, OGUN STATE — It was more than a campaign flag-off. For Alhaji Femi Omotayo, popularly known as OmoOwo, Wednesday’s gathering in Sagamu marked the moment his ambition to represent Ogun East in the Senate stepped out of the political drawing room and onto the streets of the people.
As PDP flags fluttered and supporters gathered in their numbers, Sagamu became the launchpad for OmoOwo’s campaign for the 2027 Ogun East Senatorial election, turning the city into a theatre of political mobilisation and expectation.
The atmosphere was charged with chants, solidarity songs and the familiar excitement of a major political gathering.
But beneath the spectacle was a more significant message: OmoOwo had come to introduce himself, his ambition and his political message to the people of Ogun East.
And they gathered.
The campaign flag-off attracted PDP leaders, party faithful, youths, women, grassroots mobilisers and community stakeholders, as the party began what is expected to be an extensive campaign across the senatorial district.
Among those who joined OmoOwo at the event was the PDP governorship candidate in Ogun State, Hon. Dr. Oladipupo Adebutu, whose presence added political weight to the gathering.
Adebutu used the occasion to call on PDP members to remain united and take the party’s message to every ward, community and polling unit.
He said the election should be viewed beyond party colours, stressing that voters deserved representatives capable of articulating their interests and providing effective representation.
“This is not just about a political party; it is about the future of our people and the quality of representation they deserve,” Adebutu said.
He urged party members to engage voters peacefully and convince them through a campaign anchored on hope, competence and accountability.
OmoOwo: From Candidate to Campaigner
For Alhaji Omotayo, however, the significance of the day was deeply personal.
The flag-off represented the beginning of the difficult journey from being a candidate on paper to becoming a candidate known and understood across the communities of Ogun East.
Addressing supporters, he called for a strong grassroots structure capable of taking the PDP message to the people.
“Our people are looking for representation that listens, responds and remains connected to the grassroots,” OmoOwo said.
The statement captures one of the central themes of his campaign: the demand for a Senator who remains accessible to constituents and consistently brings their concerns to the National Assembly.
His supporters see the campaign as an opportunity to promote a model of representation built around accessibility, inclusion, accountability and development.
But as the campaign gathers momentum, OmoOwo will have to translate those themes into a compelling political proposition for voters across Ogun East.
A Political Defection Adds Another Dimension
One of the major political developments at the Sagamu gathering was the return of Engr. Adeola Ayoola Sosanwo and other supporters from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the PDP.
Sosanwo, who previously contested the Ogun East senatorial election on the PDP platform in 2019, had subsequently moved to the APC.
His return to the PDP therefore provided an additional talking point at the campaign event and was seen by party supporters as a boost to the party’s grassroots mobilisation.
Sosanwo’s movement comes at a time when political parties are already positioning themselves for the 2027 elections, making every shift across party lines potentially significant.
Oluwole Joins the Gathering
Also present at the Sagamu campaign flag-off was the PDP candidate for the Remo Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives, Asiwaju Bolarinwa Oluwole.
OmoOwo expressed support for Oluwole’s aspiration, urging PDP members to build the grassroots strength required to deliver effective representation at both the state and federal levels.
For the party, the gathering provided an opportunity to reinforce the message of unity and collective mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections.
A Gathering of PDP Heavyweights
The event attracted several prominent PDP figures, including the party’s deputy governorship candidate, Alhaja Lateefat Kolapo-Sowunmi; Yeye Adenike Adebutu; Dr. Sunday Solarin, PDP Deputy National Organising Secretary; Mr. Biodun Ogunremi, Ogun State PDP Deputy Chairman; Dame Titilola Odedele, State Women Leader; and Mr. Lukman Ejalonibu, Ogun State PDP Youth Leader, alongside ward executives, community leaders and other party stakeholders.
Their presence transformed the flag-off into more than a senatorial campaign event. It became a demonstration of the party’s attempt to rebuild and consolidate its political structure across Remo and the wider Ogun East district.
Yet, despite the presence of the party’s political heavyweights, the spotlight remained firmly on OmoOwo.
Beyond the Crowd
Large political crowds often make impressive photographs. They create the sound, colour and drama that define campaign season.
But the real political work begins when the banners come down.
For OmoOwo, the challenge now is to take the energy generated in Sagamu to the wards, towns and communities of Ogun East.
He will have to explain not only what he wants to achieve in the Senate, but why voters should entrust him with their mandate.
That means engaging youths and women, meeting community leaders, listening to residents and presenting a clear agenda on the issues that matter to the district.
The campaign will ultimately be judged not by the size of a single rally, but by the strength of its organisation, the credibility of its message and its ability to connect with voters across the senatorial district.
The Road to Ogun East 2027
Wednesday’s gathering has nevertheless given OmoOwo an important political opening.
He came to Sagamu as the PDP’s Ogun East senatorial candidate.
They gathered around the campaign.
Party leaders stood with him. Supporters raised their voices. Political allies joined the mobilisation. And the return of Sosanwo from the APC to the PDP added another layer to the unfolding political story.
For OmoOwo, the journey has now moved from nomination to mobilisation.
The road ahead will be long, competitive and demanding.
But every political journey has a first major moment—a moment when ambition becomes public, when a candidate steps before the people and asks them to listen.
For Alhaji Femi Omotayo OmoOwo, that moment came in Sagamu. The launchpad has been set. The campaign has begun. The road to Ogun East 2027 is now open.
