Senate President's Aide, Seyi Olubanjo Climbs Higher With PhD Achievement At 50.

For many leaders, turning 50 represents a time to reflect on achievements already made. For Dr. Seyi Olubanjo, however, the milestone appears to mark yet another chapter in a journey defined by scholarship, loyalty, mentorship, leadership and continuous personal growth.
The Special Assistant to the President of the Senate, Hon. Oluseyi Abidemi Olubanjo, recently added another remarkable accomplishment to his growing profile after earning a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Environmental Biology from the University of Abuja.
Dr. Olubanjo was among the graduands celebrated during the institution’s 29th and 30th Convocation ceremonies held at the university’s permanent site in Gwagwalada, Abuja, from April 10 to April 18, 2026.
Beyond the prestige of the doctorate itself, the achievement represents the culmination of an academic journey spanning decades and reflects his belief in lifelong learning despite the demands of politics, governance and public service.
His educational journey began at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye, where he graduated with honours in 2001.
Determined to deepen his academic foundation, he proceeded to the University of Ibadan, where he obtained a Master of Science degree in Environmental Biology and Ecology in 2005.
Years later, recognizing the importance of governance and policy in national development, he expanded his intellectual horizon by earning another Master's degree in Public Administration with specialization in Public Policy Analysis and Development from the University of Lagos in 2013.
These multiple academic pursuits would eventually culminate in his doctoral achievement — an accomplishment many observers see as evidence of discipline, consistency and intellectual curiosity.
Yet, beyond academic excellence, Dr. Olubanjo’s story is also one of loyalty, patience and mentorship.

Before emerging as an aide to the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, Dr Olubanjo had built a long-standing working relationship with the Leader of the Senate, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, under whom he received years of mentorship, political tutelage and leadership grooming.
For nearly two decades, Olubanjo remained a close political associate and trusted aide to Senator Bamidele across multiple phases of his political journey.
He worked closely with Bamidele during his tenure as a Commissioner in Lagos State and remained part of his political structure when the erudite lawyer and political emancipator returned to Ekiti State and subsequently emerged as a member of the House of Representatives.
As Bamidele advanced politically to become a Senator of the Federal Republic and eventually the Leader of the Senate, Olubanjo remained within that circle of trust and responsibility — a journey many political observers consider a reflection of patience, loyalty and institutional memory.
Those who know him describe him not simply as a political aide but as a multidisciplinary professional whose career combines research, strategy, communication and public affairs.
Widely regarded as an accomplished political strategist, communication expert and public affairs analyst, Olubanjo has also maintained strong roots within academic and professional communities.
On May 1, as part of activities commemorating both his 50th birthday and the reception of his doctorate degree, he organized a public lecture in Abuja themed:
“The Roles of Public Scholars In Nation Building: Issues, Challenges and Prospects.”
The lecture, held at Chida International Hotels and Events Centre, Utako, Abuja, attracted scholars, professionals, public servants and political associates and further reflected his longstanding belief that scholarship must remain relevant to governance and nation-building.
A former student leader, researcher and human rights activist, Dr. Olubanjo has also played strategic roles within Nigeria’s political landscape.
He served as National Director of Research and Documentation for Asiwaju Project Beyond, one of the frontline youth-driven support organizations that mobilized support for President Bola Tinubu during the 2023 election cycle.
He also served within the Directorate of Social and Humanitarian Affairs of the Presidential Campaign Council.
Beyond politics, he currently serves as National Secretary of the Olabisi Onabanjo University Alumni Association while maintaining professional affiliations across multiple institutions.
A prolific writer, researcher and public intellectual, he is an Associate Member of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations and also holds fellowships in several professional institutions.
An ordained minister, family man and royal prince from Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State, Dr. Olubanjo represents a growing generation of leaders whose journeys are increasingly defined not only by political relevance but also by scholarship, mentorship, service and continuous self-development.
