Awolowo Market Set for Modernisation as Sagamu LG Chairman Unfolds Plans to Transform It.
By Mrs Iyabo Araba.
Sagamu, Ogun State — The Awolowo Market in Sagamu is set for a major facelift as the Sagamu Local Government has concluded plans to construct new modern shops and open stalls within the market premises.
The Chairman of Sagamu Local Government, Ogbeni Jubril Odulate, disclosed this during an inspection visit to the section of the market earmarked for the construction of the new facilities.
According to him, the planned intervention is aimed at improving the physical outlook, functionality and general condition of the market, which has served traders and residents of Sagamu for several years.
New Shops and Open Stalls Planned
Odulate explained that the Papa/Ilaro Park, located within the market premises, would be utilised for the construction of open stalls as the first phase of the project.
He said the construction of the first phase is expected to be completed within three months, noting that the project would give the market a more organised and modern appearance.
Some existing shops would have to be demolished to create space for the new development. However, the Chairman assured traders whose shops would be affected that temporary spaces would be provided for them during the construction period.
He further disclosed that the names and details of affected traders were being properly documented to ensure that their concerns are taken into consideration throughout the implementation of the project.
“No Trader Will Be Chased Away”
The Sagamu LG Chairman said the construction of the modern shops and open stalls was being facilitated by the 2027 Ogun State governorship candidate, Senator Adeola Yayi.
He stressed that the new shops were not intended for sale and assured traders that nobody would be displaced from the market as a result of the development.
“The construction of the modern shops and open stalls is being facilitated by the 2027 Ogun State Gubernatorial candidate, Sen. Adeola Yayi. I have met with the traders to explain the process personally and to identify those whose shops will be affected. The new shops are not for sale and no trader will be chased away,” he said.
Odulate expressed confidence that the project would provide Awolowo Market with the new outlook and facilities it deserves.
“I am confident that this development will give Awolowo Market the new look it deserves. I appeal to our traders to bear with us and embrace the development. The outcome will surely be worth it,” he added.
Chairman Appeals for Traders’ Cooperation
Acknowledging that the construction work could create some temporary inconveniences, Odulate appealed to traders to cooperate with the local government authorities to ensure that the project is completed within the projected timeframe.
He reiterated that the administration remained conscious of the concerns of traders and would work to minimise the impact of the construction on their businesses.
The planned modernisation is expected to improve the physical environment of the market while providing more structured trading spaces for traders and enhancing the experience of residents who patronise the facility.
Iyaloja Pledges Traders’ Support
In her remarks, the Iyaloja of Awolowo Market, Chief Mrs. Adenike Osilesi, expressed appreciation to the government for the planned development.
She pledged the support and cooperation of traders in the market towards ensuring the successful implementation of the project.
The planned transformation of Awolowo Market therefore marks an effort by the Sagamu Local Government to upgrade one of the community's established commercial centres, with the first phase expected to focus on the construction of modern open stalls at the Papa/Ilaro Park.
