In today’s business environment where corporate success is increasingly measured not only by profit margins but also by social impact, Monarch Steel Mill Ltd and Vision Gas & Power are gradually carving a reputation as companies extending their influence beyond industrial operations into community development and humanitarian support.
For residents of Oruku and Ipetoro communities in Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State, the two companies have become more than business organisations. To many families, they represent a source of hope, support and intervention in critical moments.
Last weekend, both companies once again demonstrated their commitment to community wellbeing through a large-scale free medical outreach organised for residents of the two communities located along the Ikorodu-Sagamu Road corridor near Ita Sanni, Ogijo.
The outreach attracted hundreds of residents, including women, children, youths and elderly people who came to benefit from free healthcare services at a time when rising economic hardship has made medical treatment difficult for many Nigerians.
Medical personnel from Ogijo Health Centre conducted free tests for blood pressure, diabetes, malaria, hepatitis and eye defects. Beneficiaries also received free medications and reading glasses.
But beyond the medical exercise itself, the outreach reflected a deeper philosophy increasingly embraced by forward-looking organisations — the belief that true leadership involves improving the lives of people within the communities where businesses operate.
For several residents, the programme became a turning point.
Some beneficiaries discovered for the first time that they were living with health conditions such as hypertension and diabetes, illnesses often described by medical experts as “silent killers” because they develop quietly and can lead to stroke, kidney failure or sudden death if not properly managed.
Community leaders described the intervention as timely and lifesaving.
The Baale of Oruku Community, Baale Kamorudeen Olabinjo, praised the management of Monarch Steel Mill Ltd for sustaining the annual outreach over the years.
According to him, many residents who ordinarily could not afford hospital bills now have access to medical checks, drugs and professional advice through the initiative.
“This programme is helping our people greatly,” the monarch said.
“Some people didn’t even know they were living with dangerous health conditions until they came for these tests. The companies deserve commendation for consistently investing in the wellbeing of the communities.”

Beyond healthcare, residents say the companies have also contributed to infrastructural development within the area.
Community representatives listed projects such as electrification support, provision of concrete electric poles and cables, drainage construction to control flooding, road grading and food support during festive periods as part of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives being implemented by the organisations.
For many observers, such interventions highlight the growing importance of socially responsible leadership in Nigeria’s corporate sector.
In communities where government infrastructure remains inadequate, private organisations are increasingly stepping in to bridge critical gaps.
The Chairman of God Leads Area Development Council, Comrade David Okediya, acknowledged concerns by residents over environmental pollution from industrial activities, but maintained that the companies have continued to demonstrate commitment to their host communities through impactful CSR projects.
He called on both the Ogun State Government and Sagamu Local Government to complement such private sector efforts by establishing healthcare facilities and other social amenities in the area.
The companies’ relationship with the communities, according to officials, is guided by a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2019 to ensure peaceful coexistence and mutual development.
Speaking on behalf of Monarch Steel Mill Ltd, the company’s Head of Human Resources and Administrative Manager, Mr. Sunday Aladeniyi, explained that the medical outreach formed part of the organisation’s broader vision of community engagement and sustainable relationships with residents.
He disclosed that the company had already commenced efforts toward building a health centre for the communities.
According to him, the management understands that businesses thrive better in peaceful and supportive environments, adding that investing in people remains one of the company’s priorities.
“Our relationship with the communities is important to us,” he said.
“We believe growth should not only be about business expansion, but also about improving the lives of people around us.”
Residents also commended Pastor Noel Rufus, who serves as spokesman for the communities, for helping to sustain cordial relationships between the companies and the people.

According to him, the massive turnout recorded during the programme reflected the level of need within the communities.
