“Enough Is Enough”: Sagamu Youths Petition IBEDC, TCN Over Worsening Power Outage.

Youths in Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State have formally petitioned the management of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) and Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) over what they described as the worsening electricity supply across the town.

The petition was submitted by the Sagamu Youth Association (SYA) through its Committee on Electricity Issues, highlighting concerns about the persistent inadequate load allocation to the community and its growing impact on economic and social activities.

In the letter addressed to the Managing Director of IBEDC and copied to TCN, the youths lamented that the current Band B and Band E classifications of the 11KVA feeder serving major parts of Sagamu have continued to leave residents with minimal hours of electricity daily.

The petition, signed by the chairman of the committee, Bashiru Hammed Adewale, popularly known as Honourable Prince Lahbash, noted that the poor electricity supply has severely affected small and medium-scale enterprises, artisans, and students who depend on steady power to carry out their daily activities.

According to the association, the unreliable power supply has forced many businesses in the town to rely heavily on expensive alternative energy sources such as generators, thereby increasing operational costs and slowing down economic productivity.

To address the situation, the youths urged IBEDC to consider a tentative upgrade of the 11KVA feeder from Band E to Band C, which would increase the guaranteed number of electricity supply hours to the community.

They explained that the proposed interim measure would provide immediate relief for residents while the necessary technical upgrades, including transformer improvements and other infrastructure work, are being undertaken.

Part of the petition reads:

“Residents and business owners in Sagamu have continued to suffer from inadequate electricity supply, particularly under the current Band E classification of the 11KVA feeder serving most parts of the town.

“This situation has significantly affected economic activities, small and medium-scale enterprises, students, artisans, and the general well-being of our people.

“We respectfully request that IBEDC consider upgrading the 11KVA feeder from Band E to Band C on a tentative basis while technical work and transformer upgrades are being carried out.”

In addition, the youths formally invited officials of IBEDC to a town hall meeting with electricity consumers and key stakeholders in Sagamu to discuss the challenges surrounding power supply and explore practical solutions to the ongoing electricity crisis in the town.

They assured the company of adequate security and proper coordination during the proposed engagement, expressing optimism that constructive dialogue would strengthen the relationship between IBEDC and the Sagamu community while paving the way for sustainable improvements in electricity supply.
