 Remo Voices Reach Abuja: Ayoola-Elegbeji Secures Reps’ Backing for Pedestrian Bridges on Sagamu Expressway

Residents of Remoland may soon heave a sigh of relief as their concerns over the growing dangers along the Sagamu and Ikenne/Illishan axis of the Sagamu–Benin Expressway have now reached the floor of the House of Representatives in Abuja.

Hon. Dr. Princess Adesola Ayoola-Elegbeji, the lawmaker representing Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency, has successfully secured the backing of the House for urgent safety measures, including the construction of pedestrian bridges and flyovers at critical points along the busy highway.

Raising the matter during plenary, the federal lawmaker drew national attention to the increasing rate of road accidents and fatalities along the expressway, particularly within Sagamu town where the highway cuts through densely populated communities.

According to her, while the ongoing reconstruction of the Sagamu–Benin Expressway is an important federal infrastructure project aimed at improving transportation and economic activities, it has also created serious safety challenges for pedestrians due to the absence of safe crossing points.

She noted that the highway has effectively split Sagamu town into two parts, forcing thousands of residents—including traders, workers, students, and commuters—to risk their lives daily while attempting to cross the high-speed road.

Ayoola-Elegbeji explained that the situation has become increasingly worrisome as rapid population growth around the expressway corridor continues to increase human movement across the highway.

“Every day, school children, market women and residents are exposed to serious danger while trying to cross the road,” she told lawmakers, stressing that the absence of pedestrian bridges and flyovers has turned some parts of the expressway into accident-prone zones.

The lawmaker specifically identified several high-risk locations where urgent intervention is required. These include the Sagamu Express Junction linking Total Expressway with Ewu-Oliwo, the RSS Junction connecting the Area Command to the Express Junction, and the Ikenne Express Junction linking the Dalabo area in Sagamu.

She emphasized that providing pedestrian bridges and flyovers at these strategic points would significantly reduce accidents, save lives, improve traffic flow and support the long-term development of Sagamu and neighbouring communities.

Her motion received strong support from fellow lawmakers, who agreed on the need for urgent intervention to safeguard lives along the busy expressway corridor.

Following deliberations, the House resolved to urge the Federal Ministry of Works to review the design of the ongoing Sagamu–Benin Expressway project and incorporate pedestrian bridges and flyovers at the identified high-risk points within Sagamu.

The House also called on the ministry to work closely with the Ogun State Government to ensure that pedestrian safety infrastructure is properly integrated into federal road projects in the state.

In addition, the lawmakers urged the Federal Road Safety Corps and the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps to intensify public awareness campaigns on road safety while also providing temporary pedestrian crossing measures pending the construction of permanent infrastructure.

To further ensure swift action, the House mandated its Committee on Works to conduct an on-the-spot assessment of the Sagamu section of the expressway, particularly the Total–Ewu Oliwo Junction, RSS Junction and Ikenne–Dalabo Junction, and report back to the House within four weeks for further legislative action.

For many residents in Sagamu and the wider Remo communities, the House resolution represents a significant step toward addressing a long-standing safety concern that has claimed lives and disrupted daily activities.

Ayoola-Elegbeji maintained that while infrastructure development is essential for economic progress, the safety of citizens must remain a top priority.

With the House of Representatives now lending its voice to the call, expectations are rising that the federal authorities will take swift action to address the safety concerns along the Sagamu axis of the expressway—an intervention many residents believe could save countless lives.
