Former US Vice President Joe Biden, 77, has officially emerged as the Democratic presidential nominee and would consequently face President Donald Trump in the November 3 general election.
Biden, who has been the presumptive Democratic nominee for months, clinched the party ticket via his primary victories in states across the country on Tuesday, which helped him secure the 1,991 unpledged delegates necessary to win the nomination.
The battles ahead of him and Trump are tough, as the nation faces compounding crises wrought by the coronavirus pandemic, soaringunemployment and a wave of protests over racism and police brutality.
“It was an honor to compete alongside one of the most talented groups of candidates the Democratic party has ever fielded,” Biden said in a statement, “and I am proud to say that we are going into this general election a united party.”
However, the way Trump responded to the Coronavirus pandemic and the consequential way the virus spread in the USA, the nationwide protest over racial discrimination and his attempt to use military to end the protest, which Trump's Defense Secretary opposed, are some of the challenges before him.
Would Biden defeat Trump? This is the question that Americans would answer in November 2020.
