A man whose influence stretches across the political and business landscapes of Nigeria, Daniel's trajectory is one of consistent dedication to shaping Ogun State and, by extension, the nation. From his transformative role as the Governor of Ogun State to his current tenure as a Senator, Daniel's legacy is a testament to his passion for progress.

Early Life and Formative Years

Born in Ibadan, Oyo State, on April 6, 1956, Daniel was raised in a home steeped in Christian values. His father, Most Rev. Adebola Daniel, was a notable missionary in the Church of the Lord (Aladura), while his mother, Madam Olaitan Daniel, was a trader. This blend of spiritual dedication and entrepreneurial spirit laid the foundation for Daniel's later achievements.

Daniel’s educational journey began at Baptist Boys' High School, Abeokuta, where he made his mark in debates and quiz competitions, demonstrating an early aptitude for intellectual pursuits. His academic excellence propelled him to the School of Basic Studies at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, and subsequently to the University of Lagos, where he studied engineering under the mentorship of the renowned Professor Ayodele Awojobi. His time at the university was formative, not only academically but also politically, as he became involved with the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), aligning himself with the political ideals of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

A Visionary in Business

While his early involvement in politics hinted at his future career, it was in the business world that Daniel would make a significant mark. In 1990, he founded Kresta Laurel, an electro-mechanical engineering company specializing in elevators, overhead cranes, and hoists. The company has since become a prominent player in Nigeria’s engineering sector, a testament to Daniel’s vision and business acumen. He further expanded his business portfolio with the establishment of Conference Hotels, a hospitality chain with branches across Ogun State and Lagos, becoming a driving force in the state’s economic diversification.

Political Ascendancy: From Business to Governance

Daniel's political journey truly took shape in the early 2000s. A formidable contender in the 2003 Ogun State gubernatorial race, he was elected governor, defeating an incumbent in what was described as one of the most electric campaigns in the state's history. His victory, which marked the largest electoral margin in Ogun State history, was a direct result of his innovative approach to campaigning, as he visited every ward in the state, engaging directly with the people.

During his two terms as governor (2003–2011), Daniel’s administration focused on infrastructure development, youth empowerment, and public-private partnerships. He initiated projects that would transform Ogun State, including road construction, the establishment of free trade zones, and the construction of the Gateway International Stadium, which hosted the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup. His efforts also extended to the education sector, where he reduced tuition fees at Moshood Abiola Polytechnic and founded a University of Education.

Perhaps one of Daniel’s most enduring contributions was his promotion of entrepreneurship, particularly among young people. Through the Ogun State Youth Council, he empowered youth across the state, providing them with opportunities for leadership and career advancement.

National Influence: From Campaigns to Senate

Daniel’s political influence extended beyond Ogun State. In 2010, he played a pivotal role in the southwest campaign for Goodluck Jonathan’s presidential bid, helping the then-president secure a strong victory in the region. He also served as the director-general of the Atiku Abubakar presidential campaign in 2018, demonstrating his continued prominence in Nigeria's political sphere.

Despite his achievements within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Daniel made a significant shift in 2021 when he joined the All Progressives Congress (APC). This move, he explained, was motivated by his desire to foster national unity and contribute to the country’s development. Shortly thereafter, he was appointed to various leadership roles within the APC, including heading the Media and Publicity Sub-Committee.

In 2023, Daniel’s political journey reached a new height when he was elected as the Senator for Ogun East. His wealth of experience in governance and business, combined with his unwavering commitment to public service, has positioned him as a key player in Nigeria’s legislative framework. In the 10th Senate, he was appointed the chairman of the Senate Committee on Navy, where he continues to advocate for issues related to national security and development.

Philanthropy and Leadership Beyond Politics

Daniel’s contributions are not limited to his political and business achievements. In 2002, he and his wife, Olufunke Daniel, founded the Gateway Front Foundation, a non-profit focused on uplifting the lower and middle classes in Ogun State. Through the foundation, they provided scholarships, medical treatments, and various empowerment packages to residents, reflecting Daniel’s long-standing commitment to social welfare.

He also established the Political Leadership Academy (POLA), an institute dedicated to developing the next generation of Nigerian leaders. POLA has produced graduates who have gone on to achieve excellence in both the public and private sectors, further cementing Daniel’s legacy as a mentor and guide to emerging leaders.

A Legacy of Leadership and Vision

At 69, Senator Daniel’s story is far from over.
