There are men whose lives tell a story. There are others whose lives become a story worth telling.

His Royal Majesty, Oba Professor Adeyemi Abdulkabir Obalanlege, Lanlege Ekun II, Arole Iganmode-Olofin, Olofin Apesin Olode, the Olota of Ota-Awori Kingdom, belongs unmistakably to the second category.

On Friday, August 28, 2026, the distinguished monarch clocked 60. But beyond the celebration of a milestone birthday, his Diamond Jubilee provides an opportunity to reflect on an extraordinary journey—one that has taken him from the humble experiences of childhood, through journalism and international scholarship, into the lecture room and ultimately to one of the historic traditional thrones of Yorubaland.

It is for this remarkable combination of intellectual accomplishment, professional excellence, royal responsibility and commitment to community development that Successful People Magazine proudly recognises Oba Professor Adeyemi Obalanlege as its Royal Father of the Month for August 2026.

THE PRINCE WHO LEARNED THE VALUE OF HARD WORK.

Born on August 28, 1966, in Mushin, Lagos State, Oba Obalanlege was born into royal lineage. His father, Prince Taiwo Hassan Obalanlege, was of Ijemo Compound, Ota, while his mother, Mrs Mutiat Afolake Obalanlege, hailed from Isoloshi Compound, Ota. Interestingly, both parental lines were connected to ruling houses in Ota.

Yet his childhood was not defined simply by the privilege of royal ancestry.

His formative years exposed him to the discipline of work, education and perseverance. He attended schools in Mushin and Ansar-Ud-Deen College, Isolo, before proceeding to Iganmode Grammar School, Ota. 

Accounts of his early life recall that he sold bottled drinks at Aswani Market in Lagos to support his late teacher-mother—a humble experience that offers an illuminating window into the values that would later characterise his life.

Before the palace came the marketplace. Before the crown came education. And before the title of Professor came the determination of a young man determined to make something meaningful of his life.

A JOURNEY OF INTELLECTUAL EXCELLENCE

Oba Obalanlege's educational journey is one of the most impressive dimensions of his profile.

He obtained an HND in Mass Communication from Ogun State Polytechnic in 1991, followed by a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from Independent Colleges in the United Kingdom. His appetite for knowledge took him further to Greenwich University in London, where he undertook postgraduate studies in Food Safety and Quality Management.

He subsequently earned a Master's degree in Mass Communication from the University of Leicester and later obtained a PhD in Communication Studies from the University of Antwerp, Belgium, reportedly on scholarship.

His academic journey did not end with the acquisition of degrees. It evolved into a career of teaching, research, publication and intellectual contribution.

He taught at institutions in Nigeria and Britain, including the University of East London, University of Lincoln, Ogun State Polytechnic, Lagos State University, Moshood Abiola Polytechnic and Crescent University, Abeokuta. 

His academic accomplishments eventually earned him professorial status in 2018.

Thus emerged a rare combination: a traditional ruler with the mind of a scholar and the professional instincts of a journalist.

THE JOURNALIST WHO MASTERED THE NEWSROOM

Long before he became Kabiyesi, Oba Obalanlege was already a man of the media.

His journalism career began as a reporter with The Mail Newspaper, where he benefited from the mentorship of the respected journalist and academic, Professor Idowu Sobowale. 

He later worked with The Republic, where he further developed his skills in reporting, news writing, sub-editing and investigative journalism.

He subsequently served as Public Relations Officer at Lagos State Polytechnic before joining ThisDay Newspaper, where he worked around the Tourism and Hospitality desk and became involved in marketing and advertising.

The newsroom became his laboratory. It taught him how to observe society, ask questions, investigate issues, communicate ideas and understand the relationship between information and development.

Those skills would later prove invaluable when he moved from reporting about society to becoming one of the traditional authorities helping to shape it.

His intellectual contribution to journalism has also continued through research and scholarly publications. His work has included studies on journalism practice and new media in Nigeria, reflecting his interest in how technological and global changes are transforming journalism and communication.

WHEN DESTINY CAME KNOCKING AT THE PALACE

Perhaps the most fascinating chapter of his story is that he did not originally set out to become a king.

Following the death of the former Olota, Oba Moshood Osayintola Oyede, the process for selecting a successor commenced. 

Obalanlege was among the princes considered, and out of 22 princes presented by the Ijemo/Isoloshi Ruling House, he emerged the preferred candidate on November 28, 2017.

In an interview before his installation, he acknowledged that he had never imagined himself becoming king and had initially been reluctant to leave the university. He eventually accepted the call, describing it as a duty to his people.

He was crowned in February and on May 10, 2018, he was officially installed as the 14th Olota of Ota bylà the Ogun State Government subsequently presented him with the staff and instrument of office.

The professor had become a king.

But rather than abandoning scholarship, he brought scholarship into the palace.

A PALACE WITH A DEVELOPMENT AGENDA

Since ascending the throne, Oba Obalanlege has increasingly projected the palace as an institution capable of contributing to development.

His reign has placed emphasis on education, youth empowerment, employment, infrastructure, corporate responsibility, culture and community partnership.

Ahead of his 60th birthday, the monarch disclosed that his palace had supported young people through scholarships, vocational training and the distribution of equipment to artisans. Training areas have included tailoring, welding, catering and other practical skills.

He has also spoken of collaboration with Covenant University around the development of a mobile-phone assembly initiative within a skill-acquisition centre—an indication of his interest in connecting traditional leadership with technology and modern economic opportunities.

Infrastructure has equally featured prominently in his advocacy. The monarch has engaged government and stakeholders on roads and other development challenges affecting Ota, while encouraging companies operating in the area to fulfil their corporate social responsibility obligations.

His leadership extends beyond Ota itself. As Chairman of the Awori Obas Forum in Ogun State, he has also been involved in discussions concerning the identity, recognition and development interests of the Awori people.

THE SCHOLAR-KING AS A BRIDGE BETWEEN WORLDS

Perhaps the most compelling feature of Oba Obalanlege's personality is his ability to stand at the intersection of different worlds.

He is a prince who experienced ordinary life; a journalist who became an academic; a professor who became a monarch; and a traditional ruler who continues to think like an educator.

That unusual background gives his kingship a distinctive character.

He understands the language of the newsroom, the university, the corporate world and the palace. He understands that tradition must be preserved, but also that tradition must interact intelligently with modernity.

His life demonstrates that education and tradition need not be opposites; rather, education can become a powerful instrument for preserving culture, improving leadership and creating opportunities for the next generation.
