Nigeria's Insecurity, Economic Woes: Senator Daniel Says Recovery Is In Progress.

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Navy, Senator Gbenga Daniel, has expressed optimism that 2026 will be a better year for Nigerians because the country has moved past the most difficult phase of its insecurity and economic challenges.

He made this optimistic declaration on Sunday during his family’s 21st Annual Thanksgiving Service held at Abraham’s Tabernacle, Sagamu, Ogun State, adding that 2026 will mark a major turning point for national recovery.

It was a big event that attracted the presence of the former Nigeria's High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Ambassador Sarafa Tunji Isola, former Nigeria's Ambassador to Netherlands, Ambassador Tokunbo Awolowo-Dosumu, former Nigeria's Ambassador to Zambia and Zimbabwe, Ambassador Folake Marcus Bello, former Minister of State for Health, Senator Olorunnimbe Mamora.

Senator Daniel, a two-term governor of Ogun State who is representing Ogun East Senatorial District, in the National Assembly, said the economic and governance reforms initiated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, though initially painful, are beginning to yield positive and measurable results for the country.

“First and foremost, we thank God Almighty for His grace over our lives and over Nigeria. Beyond that, we must also appreciate the President, the Commander-in-Chief, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for providing an enabling environment for people to thrive,” Daniel said.

While feeding questions from journalists after the thanksgiving service, he acknowledged that the early phase of the reforms came with severe challenges for Nigerians, particularly rising inflation and economic pressures, but noted that the situation is gradually improving.

Beyond that, we must also appreciate the President, the Commander-in-Chief, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, for providing an enabling environment for people to thrive,

“In recent times, we witnessed significant challenges. At the beginning, inflation was quite high, but we are now beginning to hear encouraging reports that the nation’s debt profile is gradually coming down.

" Despite all these difficulties, we remain grateful to God and hopeful that this year will be an unforgettable one in the annals of our country,” he stated.

Reacting to widespread public skepticism about politicians, Senator Daniel maintained that not all political leaders are dishonest, urging Nigerians to judge public office holders by their records rather than general perceptions.

“You know that politicians are known not to tell the truth. I have been holding this thanksgiving service for 21 years. I became governor of Ogun State in 2003, and this is 2026. That means that for over 23 years, I have been interacting with our people. If in all these years they have not found one lie that I told or one thing I said that turned out to be incorrect, then they should know what to do with me. That is the best thing” he said emphatically.

Speaking further on national security and expectations for the year, Daniel expressed confidence that the situation across the country will continue to improve.

“Nigeria can only get better. The worst is over. Gradually and steadily, hope is becoming reality and things are going to get better. When you look at the massive turnout here today, many of the people came on their own.

" Over 200 clergymen just came and prayed for Nigeria. I think that we are getting somewhere. I have no doubt in my mind that this year is going to be a good year.” he added.

In his sermon, the guest preacher and President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Bishop Francis Wale Oke, spoke from Psalms 50:23, emphasizing the spiritual significance of thanksgiving. He explained that thanksgiving moves the throne of God and noted that biblical figures such as King David enjoyed divine favour and abundant blessings through consistent praise and gratitude to God.

The thanksgiving service attracted a wide range of dignitaries, including Anglican Archbishop Michael Olusina Fape, a Methodist Church professor from Ibadan, Oyo State, as well as other Christian leaders, including members of the Church of the Lord (Aladura), the Baptist Church, e.t.c.

Royal fathers from Remo and Ijebu, and their queens were also in attendance, with the longest reigning monarch in Remoland, the Onirolu of Irolu, Oba Sikiru Ajibowu Adeilo Adeyiga (Agbelesebiogun III) as the representative of the Akarigbo and Paramount Ruler of Remoland, Oba(Dr) Babatunde Adewale Ajayi, CFR, who couldn't attend.
