 Awujale Succession Process Gains Momentum as “Original” Fusengbuwa Ruling House Faction Emerges.

Preparations for the succession to the throne of the Awujale of Ijebuland gained a new dimension on Thursday with the emergence of a faction within the Fusengbuwa Ruling House declaring itself as the “Original Fusengbuwa Ruling House.”

The group, which comprises the Jadiara, Bubiade, Tunwase, and Fusengbuwa Royal Houses, made the announcement at a press conference held at the Oba Adesimbo Tunwase Museum and Hall, Agunsebi, Ijebu-Ode.

Coordinated by Chief Fassy Yusuf, the faction explained that the term “Original” was not intended to alienate other family members but to establish clarity as the succession process unfolds.

Chief Yusuf noted that the official mourning period for the late Awujale, Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona, CFR, GCON, who passed on July 13, 2025, will formally end on Sunday, October 11, 2025, after which the succession procedure will commence.

Citing the Declaration under Section 4 (2) of the Chiefs Law of 1957, he stressed that only four ruling houses are recognized to present candidates for the stool—Gbelegbuwa, Anikinlaiya, Fusengbuwa, and Fidipote—with Fusengbuwa next in line.

He added that eligibility for the throne requires descent through the male line, except in cases where succession devolves through the female line under the Abidagba principle.

Addressing the claims of the Folagbade Adenuga group, Chief Yusuf clarified that Folagbade is not recognized as a ruling house in the declaration and must align with one of the established branches.

As part of its preparations, the faction unveiled membership registration forms to build a family database and Expression of Interest forms for prospective aspirants. While the forms are free, voluntary contributions of ₦2,000 were encouraged to support the exercise.

The faction is currently led by Chief Yusuf as coordinator and Pastor Prince Bola Salami as secretary, with plans to announce a substantive family head in due course.

The event was attended by prominent representatives of the four branches, including Otunba Emmanuel Odedina, Oloriebi of Jadiara; Prince Adewale Jadesinmi, Oloriebi of Bubiade; Prince Bolarinde Salami, Secretary; Chief G.A. Sanni, Balogun of Esugbon; and Oba Prof. Titilayo Hassan, Elesugbon of Esugbon.
