12 Ways Successful People Handle Failure

12 Ways Successful People Handle Failure

By Charles Segun Adegbite

One of the major differences between successful and never-do-well people are their mindset towards achieving success. That is, the way they respond to failures and how they handle failure.

The never-do-well people are often afraid of trying new things because they don't want to fail. And when they tried new things and fail, they easily give up and surrender to fate.
Success-driven people on the other hand, are always embarking on new projects, going to new places, charting an uncharted territory, starting a new relationship and learning how to do something new.

Listed below are the 12 ways they handle failure, whenever they experience one.

#1 They maintain their positive perception of failure.

Successful people know that success is a journey and not a destination. They know also that failures are part of the experiences one encounters on the way to success.

This knowledge enables them to distinguish between failure as an event, and failure as a permanent condition.
In view of this, they don't see themselves as a failure, rather as someone having essential experience in their life success journey.

With that proper and positive perception,  they see the failure as part of the process of success, and not a dreadful thing they should fear. They therefore maintain a positive attitude and good mindset .

#2 They don't blame others for their mistake(s).
Instead of blaming others or finding who to transfer the fault to, they accept full responsibilities. Even if they know or  discovered that someone's blunder was the cause, they would also blame themselves for their error in choosing the wrong person, or for not assigning the job to the right person(s).

Rather than focusing on the error of the other person, they focus on how they can improve on their ability to hire right and delegate effectively.

#3 They don't see themselves as failure.
They do not see themselves as a failure no matter the level of the defeat or setback they experienced, because they know that tough times don't last; and no condition is permanent.

Instead, they realise that their methods or approach only didn't work, and they have to change them.

#4 They do root cause analysis of the problem.
Rather than working on assumption, they find the root cause(s) of the whole problem(s).
They also do in-depth analysis of the root cause(s), to enable them know the real problem(s) to tackle, and how to solve  them fully.

#5 They learn from the mistakes(failure)
They find out the mistake(s) they made that led to the failure, huge loss or problem, and learn from that failure so that they don't repeat them.

The lessons learned often make them become more knowledgeable, wiser and stronger, each time they face the failure and overcome it.

Dr John Maxwell, in his book, Failing Forward, quotes H Stanley Judd thus: "...If you are not failing, you are not growing."

#6 They don't agree or believe that they will continue to fail.
Instead of accepting defeat as their fate, or giving up as weak people do, they maintain positive attitude of being hopeful that they will still succeed. They become more determined to succeed.

#7 They challenge outdated assumptions and beliefs, instead of accepting them blindly.
Every negative assumptions and belief system like religious, family or societal beliefs that keep people in poverty or make them live average life, is questioned, challenged and discarded by successful people.
They don't allow negative or limiting beliefs or wrong assumption hinder them from charting an uncharted course and exploring a new territory.

#8 They don't allow past failure to discourage them from taking new risks.
They know that nothing ventured nothing gained in this life. And he that dares wins.
They therefore don't allow the fear of failure or mistakes they made in the past to discourage them from making new attempts or taking great but necessary risks.

#9 They don't repeat such a mistake.
They always ensure that they don't repeat the mistake they made earlier that led to the previous failure. After learning from their failure, they use the lessons learned to do things in a new or better way, rather than doing things in same way.
They know that doing things in same way they did that led to failure will only bring more failures.

#10 They don't quit because of failure.
Successful people know that winners don't quit, and quiters don't win, and can't win.
So, they don't quit whenever they fail in a particular project or  program, examination or venture.
Instead, they keep persevering, and trying until they achieve their goals.

#11 They remain teachable.
They remain humble and have teachable spirit, so that they can learn from their mistakes. They take corrections from others who know more than they do on that particular issue. They seek advice from expert and accept superior argument.
Above all, they keep learning new things, instead of being full of themselves,  thinking they know it all.

#12 They find the way out of Failure Freeway
There is a road called Failure Freeway. It is the way most of the never-do-well love to travel every day. It's the way of wishful thinking. It's the way of living on assumptions. It is the way of cutting corners and dodging responsibilities. It's the way of doing things with ease and resisting pressure. It is the way of least resistance.
Successful people don't follow that way. And if they have been on the freeway, they quickly get out of the way and follow the road less travelled, which is the way that leads to success.
They don't keep doing things the same way they did that led to their failure. Instead, they change their thinking, change their tactics and methods of doing things. By so doing, they keep achieving their goals more often than not.
