Great leadership crisis occurred in Myanmar on Monday as military staged a coup and seized power after detaining democratically elected Aung San Suu Kyi and other  leaders.

Troops are patrolling the streets to enforce a night-time curfew, with a one-year state of emergency declared by the military.

US President Joe Biden has condemned the coup and raised threat of new sanctions against the military, unless it relinquished the nation's power it seized.

Likewise, the world body, UN and UK have also condemned the coup.

The Myanmar army alleges the recent landslide election win by Ms Suu Kyi's party was marred by fraud.

According to a BBC report, Ms Suu Kyi has urged her supporters to "protest against the coup".

"In a letter written in preparation for her impending detention, she said the military's actions would put the country back under a dictatorship."

The nation Myanmar, also known as Burma, had been ruled by the armed forces until 2011, when democratic reforms led by Aung San Suu Kyi ended military rule.

She spent nearly 15 years in detention between 1989 and 2010. She was internationally hailed as a beacon of democracy and received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1991.
